Jérôme Binachon was an Air France airline pilot. He understood what new technologies were lacking in flight simulators and he had a vision to create a flight synthetic training device with a computer based structure. To help turn his vision into reality, he turned to his friend Jean-Paul Monnin, a computer engineer. Together they knew this vision would create a breakthrough and for the next three years, they worked on developing their first FSTD prototype. Jean-Paul recalls, "During the first three years, there were many times potatoes were a main staple of our diet and if it wouldn't have been for my wife's help, by holding another job, I probably would have been eating stones".
Alsim grew into a three person company when Cyril Jousselin joined our team. His technological knowledge 'knew no bounds' and he was very instrumental in helping us create the technical breakthrough that turned our vision into a reality. |
was our landmark year! It was a year of firsts, not only for us, but also for the entire FSTD market. We became the first manufacturer to introduce TFT screens in FSTD's. A flying school, Aerhonalp, in Lyon, France, took delivery of our first Flight Synthetic Training Device. We entered into a very important agreement with Aerhonalp, starting with the FSTD and from there we grew the device into an FNPT. This was a crucial step for us because it gave us the 'stepping stone' that led to our first JAR qualification. More importantly, it was to become the first JAR qualification in France. (Today Alsim holds 90% of the FSTD marketshare in France).
became another year of first's for us. We made our first export sale to Aerotech, in Madrid, Spain. We delivered our first AL200 MCC to Airways Formation, in Agen, France. The AL200 MCC became the first reconfigurable trainer, ever qualified by JAR authorities; and we achieved the final stage of our vision, by obtaining FNPT 2 MCC qualification. Today thousands of pilots have been trained in the AL200 MCC, making it our best selling flight trainer.
| 2000 | was another big year for Alsim. We made our first government sale to SEFA. SEFA is the French State School, responsible for training all government ATC employees, PPL instructors, and calibrates all airport instruments.
We also contracted our first regional airline customer, Ausburg Airways, in Germany. We were asked to design an exact copy of their Bombardier Dash 8-300. |
Ausburg Airways took delivery of the AL300 MCC; Alsim's first FSTD designed for type rating. The AL300 MCC has received full credits of JAR-STD 2A level 2 qualification, and resulted in a significant reduction of Ausburg Airways training costs. Alsim achieved its first sale outside Europe, to the 43rd Air School, in South Africa. The 43rd Air School was so impressed with its first AL200, that it purchased two more trainers in 2003, the AL50 and AL200MCC
We crossed another milestone in 2002, with our first sale to the Middle East, when The Mideast Flight Academy, in Jordania, took delivery of our AL200. |
Our place as a major force in the market was affirmed. Airbus Training Center, chose Alsim to upgrade the visual systems of its FBS A320. We contracted to interface their FBS with the native instructor station and navigation data, and to provide the device with a coherent, cylindrical 180° visual system. We custom designed a special 15 ft. high, wrap around visual system, that was supported by a custom made metal structure. (Airbus demonstrated its satisfaction with our design, by ordering a second wrap around system, for its Chinese headquarters in 2005.) We also placed our first order for our own Diamond DA42 Twin Star. Jérôme Binachon forsaw that this aircraft represented the future in general aviation, as well as, it becoming an excellent tool for flying schools.
We opened our ultralight flying school, and conducted tests to develop an advanced training concept for ultralight licenses. The Alsim G-Sim FSTD is a generic trainer with a wrap around visual system, used intensively for ultralight training. Our tests have demonstrated excellent results, and proved schools could use a generic FSTD and obtain an ultralight license, using a trainer 50% of the time.
We took delivery of our own DA42 Twin Star. The DA42 was first used to conduct a flight test campaign. The campaign was instrumental in Alsim's development of the AL200-DA42 flight synthetic training device. By the end of the year, we had sold seven AL200-DA42's and thus solidified Jérôme Binachon's vision of the Diamond DA42 Twin Star. It was also a year of unprecedented growth, where we achieved sales in five new countries, Turkey, Malaysia, Viet Nam, Australia and Canada; and it was the very same year we opened our first North American headquarters, Alsim Inc., based in Montreal, Canada.
